Understanding the IVF Process

IVF is a multi-step process that involves several stages, each crucial for a successful outcome. Here’s a detailed look at each stage:

1. Ovarian Stimulation

  • Hormonal Medications: You will receive hormonal injections to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This process, known as superovulation, increases the chances of retrieving multiple eggs for fertilization.
  • Monitoring: Regular ultrasounds and blood tests are conducted to monitor the development of the follicles (fluid-filled sacs containing the eggs) and hormone levels.

2. Egg Retrieval

  • Trigger Shot: About 36 hours before the egg retrieval, you will receive a hormone injection to mature the eggs.
  • Procedure: Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure performed under sedation. Using ultrasound guidance, a thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall to collect the eggs from the ovaries.

3. Sperm Collection

  • Sample Collection: On the day of egg retrieval, a sperm sample is collected from your partner or a donor. The sperm is then processed to select the healthiest and most motile sperm.

4. Fertilization

  • Insemination: The collected eggs are combined with the sperm in a laboratory dish. Fertilization typically occurs within a few hours.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): In cases of male infertility, a single sperm may be injected directly into an egg to facilitate fertilization.

5. Embryo Culture

  • Development: The fertilized eggs (now embryos) are cultured in the lab for several days. Our embryologists monitor their development to select the healthiest embryos for transfer.
  • Genetic Testing: Optional preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) can be performed to screen for genetic abnormalities.

6. Embryo Transfer

  • Preparation: You will receive medications to prepare the lining of your uterus for implantation.
  • Procedure: A selected embryo (or embryos) is transferred into your uterus using a thin catheter. This is a simple and painless procedure.

7. Post-Transfer Care

  • Monitoring: After the transfer, you will be monitored for signs of pregnancy. Blood tests and ultrasounds will be conducted to confirm implantation and monitor early pregnancy development.
  • Support: Our team provides continuous support and guidance throughout this critical period.
